Water workers are working to eliminate a malfunction on the main pipeline: They report a deterioration in the quality of drinking water!

Water workers in the south of central Slovakia are working to eliminate a malfunction in the main water pipeline, which caused a temporary deterioration in the quality of drinking water in Velky Krtíš and Modro Kameni. The work is complicated by strong frosts, because of which it is not possible to provide the residents with a replacement supply of drinking water from cisterns. It may take a few more days to repair the fault. Slavomíra Vogelová, director of the marketing and communication department of the Central Slovak Water Supply Company (StVPS), stated this for TASR.

  • In the south of central Slovakia, they are solving the accident of the main water pipeline.
  • The deteriorated quality of drinking water affected Veľký Krtíš and Modrý Kameň.
  • Repair work is complicated by extremely low temperatures and snow-covered drains.
  • Replacement supply by cisterns is not possible due to water freezing.
  • Residents should not drink water, stabilization of the situation will take several days.

The accident on the main water pipeline in the Velkókrtíš district was reported to the waterman on Sunday (January 4). “Our workers have started to repair it, however localization of the fault was made difficult by the constant flooding of the excavation. For this reason, we had to shut down the supply line of the complementary water source Plachtince,” explained Vogelová, adding that the fault was subsequently located and repaired.

After resumption of water supply to reservoirs in Veľky Krtíš and Modro Kameni watermen as a result of the reported turbidity of the drinking water, they started monitoring the water and checking the reservoirs. After confirming the turbidity, they started with the desilting of the water network and also with the draining and cleaning of water reservoirs.

The situation is significantly complicated by extremely low temperatures and the fact that during snow removal, the street drains were filled up, so the water from the flushing works has nowhere to drain and freezes on the roads,” Vogel explained.

StVPS notes that even though the malfunction is mainly related to the deterioration of the optical properties of water, it is not recommended for residents to drink. Due to severe frosts, however, it is not possible to provide a replacement supply of drinking water by cisterns, as it would freeze.

“We are currently working intensively on eliminating the problem. We assume that at the current pace of work, the situation should be stabilized in the next few days, but due to the extreme frost that complicates the work, we cannot determine this exactly. We apologize to the residents for the inconvenience caused,” added Vogelová.
