Pine needles are much more than forest green. They are a valuable plant raw material in which natural compounds with a distinctive aroma are concentrated and a wide spectrum of action.
- Essential oils (aroma and support for the respiratory tract) – they are responsible for the characteristic, resin-citrus scent. In the infusion, they create the impression of “unblocking” and easier breathing, especially when you drink it hot and inhale the steam at the same time.
- Natural antioxidants (cell protection and regeneration) – the needles contain plant compounds with antioxidant properties that support the body during periods of greater stress (stress, lack of sleep, infectious season).
- Tannin compounds (tightening sensation, throat comfort) – a tannic, slightly dry aftertaste is sometimes associated with plants that soothe mucous membranes. In practice, many people like this infusion when they have a scratchy throat, because it is drunk slowly to warm up.
- Digestive support after winter, heavier meals – a warm herbal infusion after meals is a classic. Pine needles – through their oils and flavors – can promote a feeling of lightness after a meal, especially when we eat fatty foods more often in winter.
- Calming and tension reduction – the forest scent affects the senses. For many people, a cup of pine needles is an evening ritual of calm and relaxation before going to sleep.
If you plan to drink tea regularly, it is best to buy the material from a reliable source. The safest choice is herbal shops and pharmacies, where pine needles are sold as dried infusions or as an ingredient of herbal mixtures. They can also increasingly be found in tea and coffee shops and online delicatessens, provided that the product is clearly described as food raw material. Coming from a trusted, proven source is essentialotherwise pine needles may be contaminated and of little value.
The taste of the infusion depends primarily on the number of needles, brewing time and whether you use fresh or dried raw material. In the basic version, a small amount of needles is enough hot water at a temperature slightly lower than boiling water.
- For one cup, use 1-2 teaspoons of dried pine needles or a small handful of fresh, finely chopped.
- Pour about 250 ml of hot water (90-95°C) over them.
- Cover and leave to infuse for 15-25 minutes.
The longer the brewing time, the more intense and resinous the infusion will be. After straining, you can add honeypreferably when the infusion has cooled down slightly.
On cold evenings, many people reach for the warming version with the addition of a slice of fresh ginger and a bit of cinnamon. For irritated throats, a milder version with a little milk or honey and a few drops of lemon juice works best.
Most often they are enough 1-2 cups a day for several days. People who are just getting to know this taste should start with a weaker infusion, because the resin aroma can be quite distinctive.
A hot, aromatic drink quickly warms the body, and the rising steam and essential oils promote a feeling of easier breathing. At the same time, drinking such an infusion regularly helps maintain adequate hydration, which is often overlooked during the heating season.
Pine needle tea is also a good alternative to classic teas – it does not contain caffeine, has a distinct herbal-forest character and works well after a heavier mealwhen we care about digestive comfort. However, it is worth remembering that it is a supportive infusion, not a therapeutic agent. In case of severe symptoms of infection, high fever or shortness of breath, medical consultation is necessary.
Despite its natural origin, Pine needle infusion is not suitable for everyone. Caution should be exercised by pregnant and breastfeeding women, people allergic to conifers and patients with chronic kidney diseases or under constant medical care. In the case of small children, the decision to administer the infusion should be consulted with a pediatrician.
If after drinking the tea you experience symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, headache or skin reactions, you should stop taking it and monitor your body.
