Greenland resists American pressure. Political leaders reject Donald Trump’s claims about the occupation

Greenland’s political parties unanimously opposed Donald Trump’s statements about the possible occupation of the island. The US president argues security interests.

“We don’t want to be Americans,” declared Greenlandic political parties in response to Donald Trump’s latest statements about the occupation of Greenland. TASR writes about it according to AFP.

“We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders,” the leaders of the five parties in parliament said on Friday night. “The future of Greenland must be decided by Greenlanders,” they said.

Trump’s pressure on Greenland

The US president on Friday again proposed the use of force to seize Denmark’s autonomous territory with large mineral wealth. According to him, Washington is “going to do something in Greenland, whether they like it or not.”

According to him, control of the strategic island is crucial for US national security, given the growing military activity of Russia and China in the Arctic.

US strategic interests

“We’re not going to let Russia or China occupy Greenland. They will if we don’t. So we’re going to do something about Greenland, either the easy way, but if it’s not easy, we’re going to do it the hard way,” the US president said on Friday. Both Russia and China have increased military activity in the region in recent years, but neither claims the island’s territory.
