Tom Cherones, the American producer and director who won the award for his work on the iconic sitcom Seinfeld, has died aged 86. The information was announced by a representative of the artist, who confirmed that he died on Monday (5) at his home in Florence, Oregon, in the United States. He suffered from .

Cherones was born on September 11, 1939 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He graduated in Journalism and had a Master’s degree in Telecommunications from the University of Alabama, in addition to having served in the US Navy for four years. His first work on TV was with the comedy Minha Irmã é Demais, from 1986. In the 1990s, he began working on Seinfeld as a producer and director. He participated in 85 episodes over five seasons, which earned him victories at the DGA Awards (directors’ union award) and the Emmys, the biggest award on American TV.

In Seinfeld, Cherones was one of those responsible for shaping the direction pattern of American sitcons. Some of the most remembered episodes are The Chinese Restaurant and The Contest (episodes 11 of the 2nd and 4th seasons, respectively). He also made a special appearance in the episode The Pilot, the 23rd of the 4th season.

According to Deadline, Cherones left the series at the request of Jerry Seinfeld. He explained the situation in an interview with the Television Academy Foundation in 2011: “He was tired of the same thing, I think. We changed writers almost every season, and ultimately he just wanted another person, another presence, to try to keep it fresh.”

The director also worked on the series NewsRadio, Welcome Back, Kotter, Tudo por um Gato, Annie McGuire and Ellen. He is also the author of The Hardly Boys, a children’s book published in 2012.
