Trump’s threats to take control of Greenland escalate: If it ain’t easy, we’ll do it the hard way

US President Donald Trump reaffirmed his interest in Greenland on Friday. He declared that the US must act to prevent China or Russia from gaining control of the strategically important Arctic island. TASR informs about it according to the reports of the AFP and DPA agencies.

“We’re going to do something about Greenland whether they like it or not.” Trump said. “I’d like to make a deal, you know, the easy way. But if it ain’t easy, we’ll do it the hard way.” he responded at the White House when reporters asked him questions on the subject.

According to the US president, control over the island is crucial for US national security, given the alleged growing military activity of Russia and China in the Arctic. “We’re not going to let Russia or China take Greenland. That’s what they’ll do if we don’t.” he added.

Denmark and other European allies expressed shock at Trump’s threats to take control of Greenland, where the US has had a military base for several decades.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that an invasion of Greenland would mean the end of “everything” including NATO and the post-war security structures. American Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet with the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs and representatives of Greenland next week in this regard.

Trump has repeatedly talked about taking control of Greenland during his second term. This autonomous Danish territory is rich in mineral resources, and the US president has not ruled out the use of military force to acquire the island with 57,000 inhabitants.

Greenland political parties: We don’t want to be Americans

“We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders,” declared the Greenlandic political parties in response to Donald Trump’s latest statements about the occupation of Greenland. TASR writes about it according to AFP. “The future of Greenland must be decided by Greenlanders,” the leaders of the five parties in parliament said on Friday evening.
