The Venezuelan government announced that diplomatic relations were resumed with the Venezuelan government this Thursday (9). The statement was released by Chancellor Yván Gil Pinto, and comes six days after the country was attacked and its former president was captured along with the first lady. Despite the decision, Caracas reiterated that it was “the victim of a criminal, illegitimate and illegal aggression against its territory and its people”. Delcy Rodríguez’s government justified the measure to deal with Maduro’s capture.

“In order to deal with this situation within the scope of international law and in strict compliance with the principles of national sovereignty and Bolivarian peace diplomacy, the Bolivarian government of Venezuela decided to initiate an exploratory diplomatic process with the government of the United States of America, aimed at reestablishing diplomatic missions in both countries, with the aim of addressing the consequences of the aggression and kidnapping of the President of the Republic and the First Lady, as well as defining a work agenda of mutual interest”, says the text

The Venezuelan government also announced that a group of American diplomats are on their way to the country for discussions. The American embassy in Venezuela, closed since 2019 by former president Hugo Chávez, should be one of the topics discussed.
