Venezuelan refugees live in an Argentine embassy held by Brazil

The Argentine embassy in Venezuela, currently under Brazilian responsibility, houses Venezuelan refugees. Diplomatic representation was taken over by Brazil in August 2024, after the Caracas government expelled Argentine diplomats from Caracas amid the worsening of bilateral relations.

Despite this situation, Brazil must stop representing Argentina’s diplomatic interests in Venezuela. Diplomatic representation must be transferred to Italy, as determined by the corresponding CNN BrazilLuciana Taddeo.

The decision comes after a series of decisions directed at Brazil. Among the demonstrations that would have motivated the change is a publication containing an image of President Lula hugging Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

According to Brazilian government sources consulted by the report, there is no longer trust between Brasília and Buenos Aires for Brazil to continue representing the Argentine embassy in Venezuelan territory.
