Beatriz González, reference of contemporary art in Latin America, dies

The painter, Beatriz Gonzáles, considered one of the main references of contemporary art in Latin America, died on Friday (9). Gonzáles was 93 years old and was also one of the founders of MAMM (Medellín Museum of Modern Art), in Colombia.

In a statement, the museum mourned the painter’s death and highlighted her importance for art, in addition to reinforcing intellectual rigor and technical mastery.

“Beatriz was part of the group of intellectuals, artists, curators and entrepreneurs who, in 1978, led the creation of this Museum, driven by the conviction that Medellín needed a space for disruptive thinking. Since then, her trajectory has served as a guide for our institution”, wrote the institution.

Among his best-known works are “Los suicidas del Sisga” (1965) and “Auras anónimas” (2009).

The São Paulo Pinacoteca also mourned Gonzáles’ death. The museum recalled that the first exhibition of González’s work in Brazil took place in 1971, during his participation in the 11th São Paulo Biennial.

“Known as the “maestra” of Colombian art, Beatriz questioned ideals of good taste, kitsch and popular culture by mixing religious icons, mass media and vernacular painting, always in direct confrontation with the history of political and social conflicts in her country.”
