Bolívar Lamounier: Fall of industry compromises national security

The fragility of Brazilian industry and the lack of investment in technology are directly compromising Brazil’s national security.

This is the warning given to WW Especial which will air this Sunday (11) by sociologist and political scientist Bolívar Lamounier, who points to the significant drop in the manufacturing industry’s participation in the national GDP, currently at just 11%, when it already represented more than 20% in previous decades.

“How can a country that needs a strategy, needs to grow, needs to defend itself better, if we don’t have technology?”, asks Lamounier, highlighting that Brazil’s technological vulnerability puts the country in a position of increasing risk on the international stage.

The sociologist harshly criticizes the current Brazilian political class, pointing out its inability to promote necessary reforms to boost economic growth and technological development.

“Either our political class improves its quality with the large number of people who have more than two neurons entering the institutions, or we are toast”, he states.

Deindustrialization and external dependence

Lamounier points out that Brazil has become increasingly dependent on agricultural and mineral commodities, while the manufacturing industry dwindles. Although he recognizes the success of the agroindustry, he warns that the lack of its own technological development places the country in a vulnerable situation before international powers.

“What is not working at all is, obviously, the industry, because we don’t have technology. We have difficulty importing technology”, he explains. According to him, if countries like the United States decide to make Brazil’s access to technology more difficult, the country will face serious problems.

Urgent need for institutional reform

The sociologist also strongly criticizes Brazilian institutions, pointing out structural problems that impede the country’s development. He specifically mentions the judiciary as “an unbelievable scandal.”

For Lamounier, Brazil urgently needs to “get started” and carry out profound reforms within a period of less than 30 years. Otherwise, he warns that “our vulnerability will grow exponentially”, compromising not only economic development, but also national sovereignty itself.
