Government responded to the acts with strong repression; around 10,000 people have already been arrested
The number of deaths in the protests in Iran exceeded 500. According to a spreadsheet from the agency (Human Rights Activists News Agency), to which it had access, 490 protesters and 48 members of the security forces died. Around 10,000 people were arrested.
Since the end of December 2025, Iran has been experiencing a wave of protests that were initially motivated by , with high inflation, a sharp devaluation of the currency and an increase in the prices of essential goods. As the days went by, hundreds of people joined the demonstrations, demanding political and judicial system reforms, demanding greater freedom and demonstrating against Khamenei’s leadership.

The acts take place under continuous internet interruptions and severe communication restrictions. The internet in the country was after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that the protesters are “saboteurs”.
The government responded to the protests with strong repression. THE Food talks about firearms being fired, the use of tear gas and pellet gun ammunition, as well as legal threats against protesters.
According to the agency, despite the internet blockade, some media outlets linked to the government managed to publish images and reports of the protests, accusing the protesters of serious violence and damage to property and the lives of citizens.
