"Don't be sad. We are fine. We are fighters": son shares message from Nicolás Maduro

Statements were made in prison and transmitted to his lawyers, according to the son of the former Venezuelan head of state

The deposed president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, assured this Sunday that he was well and asked that no one be sad, through statements made in prison and transmitted to his lawyers, according to the son of the former head of state.

“We are fine. We are fighters”, declared Nicolás Maduro from prison in the United States, according to his son, in a video published on Saturday by the party in power in Venezuela.

“Don’t be sad,” said Maduro, who is imprisoned in New York with his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores, reported Nicolás Maduro Guerra, filmed during a meeting of the PSUV (United Socialist Party of Venezuela) in Caracas on Saturday.

Accused of drug trafficking, Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores pleaded not guilty in North American justice on Monday.

Both will be detained in the United States until the next hearing, scheduled for March 17.

Around a thousand supporters marched on Saturday through the streets of Caracas with signs proclaiming “We want your return” and chanting “Maduro and Cilia are our family!”.

Calls to express support for the deposed socialist leader have been daily since the US military operation on January 3rd.

The demonstration also coincided with the anniversary of Maduro’s inauguration for a third term, after the 2024 elections, denounced by the opposition as fraudulent.

Public television broadcast a visit by interim president Delcy Rodriguez to an agricultural fair in Petare, an emblematic neighborhood of Caracas, where a small demonstration in favor of Maduro also took place.

“We will not rest for a single minute until we recover the President,” said Rodriguez, adding: “We will save him, of course.”
