A slice of tenderloin, pork loin or plain canned ham is something for many gourmets necessary to compose a “complete sandwich”. However, it turns out that some people, for various reasons, are looking for alternatives.

What can you put with bread instead of cold meat? If we aim for ingredients with a solid protein content, then it is worth choosing eggspreferably in cooked form. It is not only a source of high-quality proteins, but also healthy fats, such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

However, if we do not like meats or eggs, then they seem to be a fantastic option fish ingredients. We can use it to prepare a tasty sandwich smoked fishmackerel, trout or salmon. In such a situation, it is worth supplementing the sandwich with a small amount of red onion and cucumber – these ingredients go perfectly with fish.

Of course, various types of meats are a great alternative to cold meats pasty. One of them is spread prepared on the basis of chicken. To prepare it you will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 chicken legs,
  • large onion,
  • a large clove of garlic or 2 small ones,
  • carrot,
  • a teaspoon of smoked paprika powder,
  • a teaspoon of marjoram,
  • bay leaf,
  • 1-2 tablespoons of mayonnaise,
  • a teaspoon of Dijon mustard (optional),
  • 3 grains of allspice,
  • rapeseed oil for frying,
  • salt and pepper.

Preparation method:

  1. Place the thighs in a pot, pour water over them, add carrots, bay leaf and allspice. Cook everything for about 30-40 minutes until the meat and carrots are soft.
  2. When the chicken and carrots are soft, remove them from the broth. After cooling down, the broth itself can be stored and used in other recipes. Before doing so, pour off half a glass of liquid – it will be needed for the paste.
  3. Fry the diced onion in a pan with heated rapeseed oil. We also add a clove of garlic – mix everything and be careful not to burn the garlic.
  4. We need to remove the meat from the cooled chicken legs. Chop them finely and put them in a bowl. If we like a thinner consistency, we can blend the chicken.
  5. Cut the cooked carrot into small cubes and add to the chicken. We complement everything with fried onion, garlic and spices – marjoram and smoked paprika. Don’t forget about salt and pepper – add the amount according to your taste preferences.
  6. The next step is to add a tablespoon of mayonnaise and, optionally, a teaspoon of Dijon mustard (if you like spicier dishes). Mix everything – the consistency will be quite thick and compact. Therefore, add the previously reserved broth – making sure that the mixture is not too thick. After this step, the paste will be ready.

Chicken-based paste it’s amazing spread on bread or roll. It’s so good you can eat it with a spoon. We can supplement the sandwiches with fresh vegetables – tomato, pickled cucumber or lettuce. We will then get a very tasty and nutritious snack.
