The started 2026 winning. This Saturday, the team went to Canindé and beat Portuguesa 1-0 in the opening round of Paulistão. The winning goal was scored by Luighi, a jewel of the Alviverde base, in the 7th minute of the second half, with assistance from Maurício. With the pre-season having started less than 10 days ago, Abel Ferreira rested his main stars. Of the usual starters, only Carlos Miguel, Allan and Murilo started among the 11, as well as the recently signed Marlon Freitas. Even so, Verdão didn’t have many difficulties and created the best chances against a team that will compete in Série D this year.
The game
In the first half, Palmeiras still felt the effects of being at the beginning of the season. Even so, he posed danger to the Portuguese goal on some occasions, especially with Allan. On the other side, Lusa offered little danger, creating only a few defensive errors from Palmeiras. On one occasion, Carlos Miguel saved Verdão in a one-on-one with Renê. The goalkeeper also saved another shot where he played incorrectly and gave the ball to his rival’s foot. Right at the beginning of the second half, Palmeiras’ life was made easier. Igor Torres made a violent tackle, hitting Larson’s shin and receiving a straight red card. Initially, the referee had only given a yellow card, but was called to review the move in VAR.
And the numerical superiority was taken advantage of by Abel’s team. Larson left Maurício in front of the goal and he just rolled to the side, where Luighi was free, for his teammate to put the ball into the back of the net. With an extra man, Abel brought in Andreas Pereira, Fuchs and Khelven, to continue dominating the game. Even so, Renê threatened the Alviverde goal with a free header inside the area.
However, nothing that would shake Palmeiras’ dominance. Palmeiras returns to the field this Wednesday, 14th, at Arena Barueri, for the classic against Santos for Paulistão.
