President of Mexico says he can talk to Trump after threats of attacks

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum described US President Donald Trump’s recent statements about possible ground attacks against drug cartels as part of their “form of communication”, and said that, if necessary, they would talk to him “to strengthen coordination”.

“Due to the statements that President Trump has made in recent days, which we consider part of his form of communication, yesterday I asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, to contact the Secretary of State directly and, if necessary, speak with President Trump to strengthen coordination,” Sheinbaum said at a press conference.

Trump said Thursday that his administration will soon begin taking action against drug cartels on land, specifically mentioning the .

“We’ve cut off 97% of drug entry by sea and now we’re going to start attacking them on land as far as the cartels are concerned,” Trump told Fox News.

“The cartels are controlling Mexico,” added the American president. “It’s very, very sad to see what happened to that country.”
