Support from Venezuela’s military is uncertain, says expert

The support of the Venezuelan military for the current regime remains uncertain, according to an analysis by post-doctorate in International Law and professor at Ambra University, Priscila Caneparo. In an interview with CNNthe expert highlighted that there are no guarantees about which path the Venezuelan Armed Forces will follow in the coming days.

Caneparo explained that, in the last two decades, the military was placed in strategic positions in the Venezuelan economy and politics as a way of supporting Chavismo and .

“They take on major positions within state-owned companies, including within the government, armed forces, obviously within this perspective of higher courts, which means that we have a State very focused on the interests of the military,” he stated.

Uncertainty scenario

The expert emphasized that the decision does not depend exclusively on Delcy Rodriguez, current interim president, nor on the American administration.

“What is happening, what seems to me to be happening is precisely that we do not have the full approval of the military in Venezuela to follow the path of institutionality in Venezuela”, explained Caneparo.

According to the professor, it is not possible to predict whether the military will continue to support Chavismo, whether it will support Delcy Rodriguez – who is currently demonstrating a more moderate stance – or whether it will align itself with the interests of the United States.

“This uncertainty about the future of Venezuela does not rest on Delcy Rodriguez, it does not rest on the Trump administration, it rests on the administration, yes, on the internal military in Venezuela to know which path they will follow”, he highlighted.

Caneparo believes that negotiations are already taking place between Delcy Rodriguez, the United States and the Venezuelan military, and that the results of these conversations should be made public in the coming weeks.

The teacher made a categorical prediction: “Maduro will not return, obviously.” He also ruled out the possibility of Corina Machado emerging as an opposition organizer or Edmundo Gonzalez assuming the presidency.

The expert’s role as an intermediary between the military and the United States was highlighted as fundamental to the outcome of the political situation in Venezuela. The ongoing negotiations must define how this trilateral cooperation will be structured, which will determine the country’s direction.
