The aftermath of the attack on a Slovak political commentator: The police have a message for the public!

In Košice, the SME daily commentator Petar Schutz was attacked. As the newspaper reported, he was hit on the head by an unknown person in the shopping center on Saturday afternoon. As a result, the commentator fell and suffered a fractured femur, for which he is awaiting surgery.

“I want to believe that it was not an attack related to the work of our colleague. I expect that the police will secure the camera footage, track down the perpetrator and investigate the motivation for his actions,” said Roman Krpelan, editor-in-chief for SME, about the incident.

The police added that a 70-year-old man was found by a passer-by sitting on the ground near the toilets, while he refused medical treatment and was escorted home. The police was informed about the incident in the evening by a relative of the victim. The police subsequently contacted him personally and began to perform the necessary actions aimed at clarifying the deed.

“The police assures the public that they are acting intensively and actively in the case. Due to the ongoing investigation, it is not possible to provide more information,” said Jana Illésová, spokeswoman for the Regional Directorate of the Police in Košice, adding that criminal prosecution for the offense of bodily harm has been initiated in the matter.
