The radiators are heating up and the house is still cold? Maybe you forgot about it

The problem is not always with the heating system or the quality of the windows. Often, a minor adjustment is enough to significantly improve the thermal comfort in your home and reduce energy losses.

If you feel a slight breeze on the windowsill and the temperature in the room drops quickly after the heating is turned off, the cause may be incorrectly positioned windows. Even modern models do not always work optimally all year round. In many of them, the manufacturer provides the possibility of seasonal adjustment of the pressure of the sash to the frame, i.e the so-called winter mode. This solution allows you to reduce micro-gaps through which heat escapes. Effect? Rooms heat up faster and maintain temperature longer, and radiators do not have to work at the highest speed.

Winter mode involves increasing the pressure of the window sash to the frame. Special fittings are responsible for this. Most often they are metal locking rollers with eccentricity. In the warmer months, the pressure is lower, which favors natural air exchange. In winter, however, such “leakage” works to the detriment of the home budget. After switching the fittings to winter mode, the seals are tightened, thanks to which the window insulates better against cold, wind and outside noise.

Not every window can be set to winter mode, but most modern models made of PVC, wood or aluminum offer this option. Just open the wing and look at its side edge. If you notice metal rollers with a notch, dot or linewhich can be turned with an Allen key or a screwdriver, is a sign that adjustment is possible. When in doubt, it is worth checking the manufacturer’s documentation or asking a service technician, because “forcible” adjustments may do more harm than good.

The adjustment itself is not complicated and usually takes a few minutes per window. You will need it Allen key (usually 3 or 4 mm) or screwdriver. Most important steps:

  • open the door and locate all locking rollers,
  • gently turn them in the direction of increasing pressure (the direction depends on the system),
  • make sure all points are aligned evenly,
  • close the window and check if the handle works smoothly.

If the handle shows significant resistance or the pressure is too great, it is worth undoing the adjustment slightly.

If after adjustment the window rubs against the frame, the handle gets stuck or you still feel a draft, the problem may lie deeper (e.g. in the hinges or sash geometry). In such a situation it is better to use the website’s helpinstead of risking damage to the fittings.
