This is the richest family in Portugal: discover the value of their fortune and find out where it comes from

The concentration of wealth in Portugal became evident again in 2025, but this year the emphasis is clearly on the fortune of the country’s richest family, in a context of appreciation of large business, industrial and financial holdings that once again placed the same names at the top of the national economic hierarchy.

According to Forbes Portugal, the aggregate assets of the 50 richest families in Portugal reached around 47.7 billion euros in 2025.

However, one family clearly stands out above the rest, consolidating its position as the richest in the country.

Amorim family leads alone

The absolute leadership belongs to the Amorim family, made up of the sisters Fernanda Amorim, Paula Amorim, Marta Amorim and Luísa Amorim, with assets valued at around 5,840 million euros. This value places the clan prominently at the top of the national ranking, with a comfortable margin compared to other competitors.

The basis of the Amorim family fortune is based on a vast and diversified business portfolio. The most relevant nucleus continues to be the participation in Corticeira Amorim, world leader in the cork sector, but the heritage also extends to the energy, financial, real estate and tourism sectors.

Galp, cork and strategic investments

One of the central pillars of the family’s wealth is its historic participation in the Galp group, one of the largest Portuguese companies listed on the stock exchange, with a strong presence in the energy and fuel sectors. Added to this is the control of Corticeira Amorim, whose international activity has allowed for consistent appreciation over the years.

The family also holds interests in Amorim Luxury, Banco Luso-Brasileiro, as well as in agricultural estates and high-value real estate investments, reinforcing a diversification strategy that has guaranteed stability and growth of assets, according to the same source.

Lasting influence

Despite the size of their fortune, the Amorim family maintains a relatively discreet stance in the public sphere. Professional asset management and investment in strategic sectors of the national and international economy have been decisive in maintaining leadership in the ranking of the largest Portuguese fortunes.

The solidity of the business and the presence in areas considered structuring the economy explain why the family continues, year after year, to occupy first place without much challenge.

Who comes next in the rankings

In second place comes the Soares dos Santos family, with an estimated net worth of 3,200 million euros. His fortune is strongly associated with the Sociedade Francisco Manuel dos Santos and the Jerónimo Martins group, owner of the Pingo Doce supermarket chain.

Third place belongs to the Guimarães de Mello family, with around 3,100 million euros, thanks to its holdings in the José de Mello Group, which includes companies such as CUF, Brisa, Bondalti and José de Mello Residências.

Sonae and other great fortunes

In fourth place are Nuno Azevedo, Paulo Azevedo and Cláudia Azevedo, with a combined net worth of 2,790 million euros. The family controls the Sonae group, owner of Continente, as well as investments in other relevant areas of the Portuguese economy.

Rounding out the top 5 is Dionísio Pestana, with an estimated fortune of 1,980 million euros, built mainly through the Pestana Group, one of the largest national hotel groups, with a strong international presence, according to the same source.

How the ranking is created

It clarifies that it annually evaluates the assets of around a hundred Portuguese businesspeople, based on shares in listed and unlisted companies. The analysis uses exclusively available public information, including financial reports, market data and shareholdings.

Despite the diversity of names and sectors represented, the 2025 ranking confirms a clear trend: the Amorim family remains, prominently, the richest in Portugal, reinforcing a position that has spanned generations and economic cycles.
