Will the tension escalate? The Trump administration was supposed to lead the initial negotiations on a potential attack on Iran

US President Donald Trump’s administration officials have held “initial discussions” about a potential attack on Iran. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) brought the information on Saturday, citing its sources, writes TASR.

The negotiations were supposed to cover whether and what facilities the United States should intervene in the event of Trump’s approval. According to the WSJ source, the possibility of a “large-scale air strike” on Iranian military targets was also considered. However, the source noted that there is currently no threat of an “imminent attack” if personnel or military equipment have not yet been transferred to Iran.

Trump said on Saturday that the United States was “ready to help” the protesters in Iran. His comments came a day after he said Iran had a “big problem” and reiterated its warning against military strikes. In early January, the US president warned Iran that the United States would come to their aid if its security forces opened fire on peaceful protesters. Even then, Trump stated that the US was determined and ready to act.

In Iran, people have been protesting for almost two weeks in response to a deep economic crisis. According to activists, the interventions of the security forces resulted in the death of dozens of demonstrators. Authorities in the country have restricted access to the Internet since Thursday. During the 12-day war between Israel and Iran in June 2025, the United States attacked a trio of Iranian nuclear facilities that Trump claimed had been completely destroyed. According to him, the strikes were intended to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, but Iran denies such efforts.
