The Golden Globes were dominated by the film hits Hamnet or One Battle After Another. The best actor surprised

The action film One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, reigned on Sunday at the 83rd annual Golden Globe Awards, the most important American film and television awards after the Oscars.

The eccentric film about an aging revolutionary played by Leonardo DiCaprio turned in four of the nine nominations – for best director, best comedy/musical, best screenplay and best supporting actress (Teyana Taylor). The surprise is the prize for the best dramatic film for the literary adaptation of Hamnet. TASR informs about it based on the reports of AP, AFP and DPA agencies.

  • The film One Battle After another won four Golden Globes.
  • The best dramatic film was the literary adaptation of Hamnet.
  • The best actor was Timothée Chalamet for the movie Big Marty.

“You are so generous with this affection for me and this film — and I accept it,” Anderson said while accepting the award. His film, featuring violent left-wing radicals, crackdowns on illegal immigrants and white supremacists, has won audiences and critics alike at a time when the United States is deeply polarized, AFP noted.

Winners

However, in the prestigious category of actor in the main role, his star DiCaprio and other nominees such as George Clooney or Ethan Hawke were pushed to the sidelines by the American actor with French roots, Timothée Chalamet, who played the ambitious table tennis player Marty Mauser in the film Big Marty, set in the 1950s. Chalamet was previously nominated four times, but failed.

Award-winning best drama Hamnet, depicting the life of William Shakespeare and his wife as they cope with the death of their son, beat Ryan Coogler’s favorite horror film Sinners, about the segregated US South in the 1930s. Its director is the Chinese Chloé Zhao, the producer is Steven Spielberg. It was based on Maggie O’Farrell’s book about the death of Shakespeare’s son, which inspired the playwright to write the play Hamlet. Irish actress Jessie Buckley, who plays Shakespeare’s grief-stricken wife Agnes, won the award for best actress in a drama.

Movies that caught their attention

The seven-time nominated film Sinners, which surprised the audience with a mixture of vampires, politics, race relations and blues music, had to settle for a prize in the categories of best box office hit or best soundtrack (Ludwig Göransson).

Norwegian family comedy-drama Emotional Value won Best Supporting Actor (Stellan Skarsgard).

Rose Byrne won Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her role in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. Netflix’s K-pop musical megahit: Demon Hunter won Best Song and Best Animated Film.

Series and TV awards

In the television category, the British series Adolescent, about a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a classmate, dominated with four awards. The series Urgent produced by HBO won the award for the best drama, and the series Studio dominated the comedy category.

The Brazilian thriller Secret Agent, set during the military dictatorship in Brazil in the 1970s, won in the categories of best film in a language other than English and best actor in a drama (Wagner Moura).

A number of celebrities, including Mark Ruffalo, Natasha Lyonne and Wanda Sykes, came to the awards ceremony wearing a badge with the words “BE GOOD” (“Be good”) – referring to the 37-year-old American Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis on Wednesday, sparking new protests in the US against President Donald Trump’s immigration policy.

Awards season is upon us

The awarding of the Golden Globes kicked off the season of Hollywood film awards, which will culminate in the March presentation of the Oscars – the awards of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Golden Globes were handed out in 27 film and television categories, as well as a new podcast category. The awards ceremony was broadcast live by CBS.
