The United States is getting tougher against Cuba, oil and money from Venezuela have stopped

Donald Trump is increasing pressure on Cuba and threatening to end oil and financial supplies, but Cuban President Díaz-Canel insists on respect for international law and refuses any negotiations with the US except for migration contacts.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel declared on Monday that Havana is not holding talks with the United States. He spoke after US President Donald Trump’s call for Cuba to come to an agreement with Washington or face the consequences. The APF agency informed about it, writes TASR.

  • Cuba is not in talks with the United States.
  • The United States is increasing pressure on Cuba over Venezuela.
  • Trump threatens Cuba with further consequences without an agreement.
  • Díaz-Canel rejects coercion and demands respect for the law.
  • The US trade embargo against Cuba has been in place for decades.

“There are no talks with the US government other than technical contacts in the field of migration,” Díaz-Canel wrote on the social network. According to Trump, the two countries are holding talks after the US military detained Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a leftist ally of Havana.

Trump is increasing the pressure

Trump said on Sunday that “no more oil or money will go to Cuba” from Venezuela and that Havana should reach an agreement with the United States “before it’s too late.” He did not provide details of the potential agreement.

Díaz-Canel responded on Monday that no one will tell Cuba what to do. He added that relations with the US “must be based on international law instead of hostility, threats and economic coercion”.

The trade embargo has lasted for decades

The United States has been applying a trade embargo against Cuba for decades, but Trump has increased the pressure on the island country in recent days. Since 2000, Havana has increasingly relied on Venezuelan oil imported under an agreement with Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chávez, AFP wrote.
