This morning, Venezuela has released around twenty political prisoners, among whom are two Italians and the citizen of dual Spanish-Venezuelan nationality, Alejandro González. All of them have been released from the Rodeo 1 prison in Caracas, after intense diplomatic efforts.
The activist, also of dual Spanish-Venezuelan nationality, was released from prison on January 10, after serving two years in the prison of the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (SEBIN), El Helicoide.
For their part, the aid worker Alberto Trentini and the businessman Mario Burlò, who were released this morning, are fine and are waiting at the Italian Embassy in the capital in Venezuela and in the next few hours they will be able to return to the country, announced the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, reports Efe. “I spoke with our two compatriots: they are fine and will soon return to Italy,” declared Tajani, explaining that “the plane that will take them home has already left Rome.”
His release was decided by the current Venezuelan president Delcy Rodríguez, thanks to Italian diplomatic and intelligence efforts and the mediation of the United States, after days of great tension, Italian media explained. Following the United States’ arrest of President Nicolás Maduro, the United States, like other Western countries, asked Rodríguez to release political prisoners as a gesture of breaking with the previous government. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also sent a public message to Delcy Rodríguez requesting the release of the Italians.
