Wagner Moura wins Golden Globe for ‘Best Actor’

The actor This Sunday (11), he won the Golden Globe, in the category of ‘Best Actor – Drama’. The actor, the only Brazilian to compete in the category in history, was awarded for his role in ‘The Secret Agent’, a film that also competed for ‘Best Film – Drama’ and ‘Best Non-English Film’. The actor played Marcelo, a university professor who returns to the capital of Pernambuco in search of refuge, but ends up involved in a network of espionage and conspiracy.

This was not the first time that Wagner Moura was nominated at the awards, 10 years ago, in 2016, he was competing for ‘Best Actor – Series’ for his role in Narco, but was defeated by Jon Hamm, from Mad Men. This year he competed with:

  • Joel Edgerton, from ‘Train Dream’;
  • Oscar Isaac, from ‘Frankenstein’;
  • Dwayne Johnson, from ‘Fighter’s Heart: The Smashing Machine’;
  • Michael B. Jordan, ‘Sinners’;
  • Jeremy Allen White, from ‘Springsteen: Save Me From the Unknown’.

This is Moura’s first Golden Globe award, and Brazil’s second in a row, as in 2025, which was also competing for ‘Best Non-Foreign Language Film’, but lost the statuette to ‘Emilia Pérez’. This year,

The Secret Agent

Set in Recife in 1977, during the military dictatorship, “The Secret Agent” follows Marcelo (Wagner Moura), a university professor who returns to the capital of Pernambuco in search of refuge, but ends up involved in a network of espionage and conspiracy. The film is Brazil’s official bet to seek a spot at the 2026 Oscars and has already accumulated international recognition. The production was awarded at the Cannes Festival (May) and by the New York Critics Circle (NYFCC), where it won the awards for Best International Film and Best Actor. The film is directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho.
