Analysis: Resistance to Messiah decreased after gestures from Lula to Alcolumbre

Resistance to the appointment of the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) decreased significantly in the Federal Senate after a series of gestures made by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the President of the House, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP). The analysis is by political analyst Teo Cury at CNN Behind the Scenes.

Messias, nominated by President Lula to fill a vacancy in the Supreme Court, had dinner last Monday (12), with the president of the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) of the Senate, Otto Alencar (PSD-BA). The meeting is part of a series of conversations that the nominee has been holding with senators.

According to Teo Cury, , which was tense at the end of last year specifically in relation to Messias’ nomination, went through a process of relaxation. “A series of gestures were made by President Lula to Davi Alcolumbre and from Davi Alcolumbre to President Lula, which helped to ease this relationship and the specific situation of Jorge Messias in the Federal Senate”, explained the analyst.

According to the analyst at CNNdespite the improvement in the political climate, the process is not yet fully pacified. There is an expectation of a new conversation between Lula and Alcolumbre later this month, before the formal sending of the presidential message with the nomination, which should take place at the beginning of February. The objective is to “trim any rough edges and loose ends” so that proceedings in the Senate do not become a problem for the nominee.

Nomination process

The formal nomination process has not yet begun, as President Lula has not sent the presidential message to the Senate. Both Otto Alencar and Alcolumbre are awaiting this official document to define the date of the hearing at the CCJ, the first step towards approving the name of Messiah.

It is expected that, in addition to the appointment of Messias to the STF, Lua will also forward the appointment of a judge from the TRT (Regional Labor Court of the 5th Region) to the TST (Superior Labor Court).

Although this is considered a difficult time for any nominee, the current assessment is that Messias will not face difficulties in being approved, unlike the scenario observed at the end of last year, when his nomination generated significant resistance in the Senate.
