CGTP delivers petition with more than 190 thousand signatures to “defeat labor package”

Tiago Oliveira said that “an attack” on the world of work is at stake and promised to “continue the fight” if the executive led by Luís Montenegro does not back down and withdraw the proposal from discussion.

A delegation from the CGTP executive committee delivered this Tuesday to the prime minister’s official residence, in São Bento, a petition with more than 190 thousand signatures to “defeat this labor package”.

“The Government has already had every chance to open its eyes”, said the general secretary of CGTP, speaking to journalists in Lisbon, after today’s demonstration in front of the Assembly of the Republic and minutes before a delegation from the union center traveled to São Bento to deliver a petition with “more than 190 thousand signatures” to “defeat” the labor package.

Tiago Oliveira said that is concerned “an attack” to the world of work and promised to give “continuity of the fight” if the executive led by Luís Montenegro does not back down and withdraw the proposal from discussion.

Questioned by journalists, the CGTP leader reiterated that “all forms of struggle are on the table” and ensured that the union center “will not abandon the workers”.

“We will continue to demand a response from the Government to this ongoing attack. We will continue to demand from the Government the withdrawal of this labor package”, he stressed, promising not to “give rest”.

In the final stretch of the demonstration, Tiago Oliveira addressed the thousands of union leaders, delegates and activists, pointing out that the Government aims to “profoundly change work relationships” ea “correlation of forces, even more in favor of the patronage” and considers a “brazenness” to present “a document of this size”.

“It normalizes and further increases precariousness, creates the necessary tools to go further in the deregulation of working hours, makes dismissals even easier, attacks collective contracting, attacks the right to strike and limits the entry of unions into workplaces”, he stated, indicating that he is an executive “committed to the big and powerful”.

The CGTP leader also said that the Government’s draft revision of labor legislation “is to reject” and criticized the successive postponements of the meeting that the CGTP has planned with the prime minister.

And at a time when the country is just a few days away from voting to choose the next President of the Republic, he left a warning to navigation: “the President of the Republic cannot be a mere observer. He cannot be just an extra. He is someone who takes an oath and who swears, to defend, comply with and enforce the Constitution of the Republic”he stated.

Tiago Oliveira also highlighted that the Constitution “born from the workers’ struggle” and called for voters to go to the polls next Sunday to decide (…) for workers’ rights”, said, noting that “against the labor package is also included there”.

“Along with the demand for the withdrawal of the Labor Package, the struggle for demands in each company, in each workplace is essential”, he also said, demanding a 15% salary increase of a minimum of 150 euros for all workers and the national minimum wage of 1,050 euros.
