Do you have any of these ‘forgotten’ books at home? They can be worth thousands of euros and not know it

Are there any of these books at home? Can be worth thousands of euros and not the knowledge

Some books forgotten on domestic shelves have been sold for prices exceeding 400 thousand euros. These are often rare editions, published just a few decades ago, which attract collectors from all over the world.

At international auctions, examples in good condition can be sold for amounts comparable to the price of a luxury car or a house.

Limited print runs that mark history

One of the most emblematic cases is the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, published in the United Kingdom in 1997. Today, this work is one of the most desired on the collectors’ market.

According to the Heritage Auctions platform, only 500 copies of this edition were printed, of which around 300 were distributed by libraries. The small number and the worldwide success of the saga helped to skyrocket the value of these copies.

A book in good condition can be worth between 35 thousand and 117 thousand euros, with cases exceeding these figures. In 2021, one of these editions was sold for more than 430 thousand euros, an amount that in many Portuguese cities reaches the value of a house.

Tolkien continues to surprise collectors

Interest in rare editions is not restricted to JK Rowling. The Hobbit, by JRR Tolkien, continues to attract attention in the literary market.

A first edition from 1937 was recently sold for around 50,000 euros, more than double the initial estimate, while copies signed by the author have already sold for more than 160,000 euros.

Classics that reach unexpected values

Among other classics, Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, also reaches high prices: first editions sell for more than 162 thousand euros.

In Portugal, there are examples of valuable editions, such as original works by Fernando Pessoa. The 1934 edition of Message can fetch between 1,170 and 5,850 euros, with the price increasing when it includes handwritten dedications.

Factors influencing price

The price of a book depends on several elements, such as the original edition, condition, demand and special characteristics, such as printing errors or autographs. Limited or restricted circulation editions are the most valued.

Experts recommended by recommend that, when you suspect that you have a rare book, you use accredited appraisers or consult specialized international platforms, such as AbeBooks or Biblio.
