National airports handled 68.9 million passengers between January and November, which represents an increase of 4.7% compared to the same period in 2024, while freight traffic registered a more moderate increase, of 0.3%, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
According to INE’s quick air transport statistics, around five million passengers passed through Portuguese airports during the month of November, a figure that corresponds to a growth of 5.0% compared to November 2024.
That month, an average of 79.1 thousand passengers disembarked per day, above the 75.8 thousand registered in November of the previous year, which represents an increase of 4.4%, says the statistical institute.
In the first 11 months of the year, the pace of traffic growth remained similar, with Lisbon airport concentrating almost half of the total number of passengers handled.
33.5 million people passed through Humberto Delgado Airport, 48.6% of passengers, which represents year-on-year growth of 2.9%.
Porto airport concentrated 22.8% of passengers, reaching 15.7 million (+6.1%), while 14.6% of passengers passed through Faro Airport, 10.0 million people, according to INE.
“The United Kingdom remained the main country of origin and destination for flights between January and November, showing increases in both disembarked passengers (+2.3%) and embarked passengers (+2.2%), compared to the same period in 2024”, indicates the statistical institute.
“In the opposite direction, France recorded decreases of 2.1% in disembarked passengers and 1.6% in embarked passengers, still occupying 2nd position among the main countries of origin and destination. Spain, Germany and Italy completed the list of main countries of origin and destination, placing themselves in 3rd, 4th and 5th positions, respectively”, indicates the INE.
Regarding the movement of cargo and mail at national airports, the 0.3% increase recorded from January to November represents a slowdown compared to what occurred in 2024, a year in which in the first 11 months of the year the increase was 14.7%.
The movement of goods at Lisbon airport represented 77.6% of the total, reaching 181.2 thousand tons (+0.3% compared to the same period in 2024), also indicates.
