Mother of baby who died in fire in SP is arrested for abandonment

The mother of the baby who died in a fire on the morning of this Monday, 12th, in an apartment in Vila Prudente, east of São Paulo, was arrested for abandonment of an incapacitated person. According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the police found that the child was alone at the time of the fire.

The woman, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken to the police station, interviewed and arrested in the act. The case is being investigated by the 42nd Police District, which is located in Parque São Lucas.

According to the secretariat, the investigation is underway to discover the causes of the fire and clarify the circumstances behind the fact that the baby was alone at the scene. In the fire, which happened in a building on Avenida Vila Ema, a man also died.

According to the Fire Department, the flames reached the third floor of the building. The two victims burned to death. The corporation mobilized ten vehicles to respond to the incident. According to firefighters, there was a large amount of combustible material burning at the scene. The fire in the east zone building started around 5am and was controlled by 10am.

Due to the fire, the Traffic Engineering Company (CET) blocked traffic on Avenida Vila Ema, towards the Center, near Avenida Salim Maluf. In the direction of Vila Prudente, traffic was diverted to Rua Dr. Paulo Aranha de Azevedo.

In the direction of Sapopemba, the detour followed Rua Itaperima, Rua Nhengaibas, Rua Antonio Bitencourt, Rua Dr. Murai, Praça Rolim de Moura and exiting at Avenida Salim Farah Maluf.

The roads were reopened around 4pm.
