When to sow tomatoes for seedlings? Don’t miss this important deadline

The ongoing winter is the time when we slowly prepare for the gardening season. During this period, we first of all check the winter covering of plants and remove snow caps that cover trees and shrubs. The end of January and February is also the time for the first sowing of seedlings. During this period, we plant mainly vegetables with a long growing season and some species of border flowers. Tomatoes are one of the most frequently grown vegetables in Polish gardens and balconies. From a botanical point of view, a tomato is a fruit, but due to its use – we treat it like a vegetable. Many people wonder when to sow tomatoes for seedlings. Gardeners indicate that the best date is mid-March to early April. A little earlier, at the end of February, you can plant some early varieties, such as Reniro F1 or Lianne F1. It is important not to exceed the deadline of mid-April because the fruit may not have time to ripen. For them to take root, you need warmth in the apartment, temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius, and plenty of sunshine.

How to sow tomatoes for transplants?

First, prepare pots or special pots and fill them with soil. Gently knead the soil with your hand and then start placing the seeds. It is recommended to plant two seeds every three centimeters. It may happen that one does not germinate, and if two plants appear, we remove the weaker seedling. After inserting the seeds, knead everything and cover it with a small layer of soil. Finally, lightly sprinkle with water. Remember that the water stream cannot be too intense as it could wash away the seeds. Place the prepared containers with seeds in a bright and warm place. When the tomatoes start to sprout and the first leaves appear on the seedlings, they should be pricked out. We carefully remove the seedlings and transplant them to a new substrate with a larger surface area. The container should have a hole at the bottom to reduce the risk of root rot. We plant tomatoes in the ground after the cold winter of Zośka, i.e. on May 15.

. This will strengthen their root and stem systems. Multi-component fertilizers with a balanced composition will be perfect for this purpose. You can also use homemade nutrients to fertilize tomato seedlings. Pour 200 ml of cow’s milk into a small container and then add 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Mix everything thoroughly and apply the fertilizer with a syringe, 5 ml per seedling. Milk will nourish tomatoes and increase their resistance to diseases.
