The United States wants to get Greenland. A Republican congressman introduced a bill to annex it

Congressman from Florida Randy Fine presented a proposal to annex Greenland and incorporate it into the USA. Trump says that taking control of the island is a matter of national security and warns of Russian and Chinese influence.

Florida Republican Congressman Randy Fine introduced a bill on Monday to annex Greenland and make it the 51st US state. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

Fine said the law would allow US President Donald Trump to “take any action necessary to annex or acquire Greenland”.

Greenland and national security

“Greenland is not a remote base we can afford to ignore, it is an important element of national security,” Fine said in a statement.

Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory with 57,000 inhabitants, is rich in mineral resources and of great geostrategic importance. Trump declares that the US needs Greenland for national security reasons. On Sunday, on board the presidential special, he repeated that the US will seize the island in the Arctic “one way or another” because, according to him, Russia or China would do it otherwise. In response to the claim, Beijing said the US should not use other countries as a pretext to advance its interests in Greenland.

International disagreement

Both Democrats and Republicans rejected Trump’s rhetoric. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that an armed US attack on Greenland would mean the end of NATO.

At the same time, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen announced on Tuesday that together with his Greenlandic ministry colleague Vivian Motzfeldt they will meet with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House on Wednesday and discuss Greenland.
