The US has in its possession a device that it suspects is linked to the ‘Havana syndrome’, according to North American media

El Periódico

The CNN television network reported this Tuesday that the Department of Defenserenamed War Departmenthas been testing a device for a year that, “according to some researchers,” could be linked to the set of ailments and psychological effects that American diplomats and intelligence agents posted abroad have been suffering, better known as Havana syndrome. The device, always according to the same source, was acquired by the US Department of Homeland Security in the final stages of the presidency of Joe Biden in exchange for “million dollars“, although it does not specify the figure, and it has “Russian components.”

This news outlet cites several anonymous government sources, but both the CIA and the Department of Homeland Security and Defense have avoided reacting and have not issued any reaction when contacted by CNN. According to two of the people who leaked the news, the amount of money paid contains “eight figures“. The device emits radio wavesaccording to one of the sources, and it is not entirely Russian, although it has components from this country. It fits in a carry-on backpack, and it has not been made known from which people or entities it would have been acquired. If these statements are confirmed, the main fear now for researchers is that the technology used in a weapon will end up spreading around the world.

Open controversy

The news has revived the open controversy in the US around the aforementioned syndrome, with a sector of the Government totally skeptical about the possibility that an acoustic weapon capable of generating damage and disability in a person is small and mobile, even questioning whether the so-called Havana syndrome has actually existed. Faced with skeptics, The Insider’s team of researchers led by the Bulgarian Christo Grozev published in the spring of 2024, thanks to a hacked email message, a long investigation in which it determined that the designer of the weapon was Colonel Ivan Terentievfrom the feared GRU, the Russian military intelligence service. The report even includes the names of some of the members of the infamous unit 29155 who were close to incidents in which the weapon supposedly came into action, such as its commander Andrey Averianov and his son Albert.
