Two cancer patients die at the Burgos Hospital due to a failure in the preparation of a medication | Society

Two cancer patients at the University Hospital of Burgos () have died as a result of a failure in the preparation of an oncological treatment, as sources at the hospital have confirmed to EFE. The same sources assure that it was a human error and that the Health of Castilla y León (Sacyl) assumes it as its own. There are also three other patients affected by the same problem, one of whom is admitted to the ICU.

According to hospital sources, the events occurred during the Christmas holidays and were due to a failure in the preparation of a medication, specifically, in the preparation of a dose for a specific number of patients, so there is no risk for other people who continue their treatment at the center. As for those affected, two have died, another is in the ICU, a fourth is already on the ward and the fifth has been discharged.

From the Burgos hospital they have indicated that as soon as they became aware of the situation, an internal investigation was opened to clarify what happened, and that the action protocols have been reviewed so that there are no more risks and the possibilities of human errors are minimized.

They have also stated that they have been in contact with the families and patients at all times and that they have been transparent with them by offering them information and appropriate explanations, in addition to making the center’s resources and its legal services available to them.

The University Hospital of Burgos (HUBU) has insisted that what happened is limited only to a specific human error, which affected those five patients, so there is no risk for any others, and that they assume the error as their own without pointing out anyone on the staff as responsible.
