United Kingdom will accelerate law that criminalizes deepfakes with sexual content

The United Kingdom will bring into force this week a law that criminalizes the creation of intimate images without consent, Technology Minister Liz Kendall told parliament on Monday, after regulator Ofcom launched an investigation into Elon Musk’s X.

Kendall said the law would make it “illegal for companies to provide tools designed to create such images.” She said the measures taken last week by X to limit access to this image creation feature to paid subscribers only were not enough.

‘These are not harmless images. ‌They are weapons of abuse, disproportionately directed against women ‍and girls,’ she told parliament.
