Vienna Airport suspends operations due to ice

Frankfurt Airport cancels almost 100 flights due to snow and ice

The airport recommends travelers to check with their airlines about the status of their flights

Vienna airport is unable to operate due to ice covering the runways and surrounding areas, following snowfall in recent hours.

“We assume that the situation will persist, in any case, until around 11:00 (10:00 in Lisbon),” airport spokesman Peter Kleemann told the APA news agency.

Across the entire operational area, including runways, platforms and adjacent service roads, “a thick layer of ice was formed which, immediately after de-icing work, refreezes”, explained the spokesperson.

Airport services have been working since dawn today to restore air traffic as quickly as possible.

The temporary closure forced flights to be diverted to other airports, such as Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne and Venice and there were delays in departures.

The airport recommends travelers to check with their airlines about the status of their flights and, in case of cancellation, not to go to the facilities to avoid problems.

The frosts also caused problems with road transport in the area and railway connections from Vienna to the airport were suspended.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled every day at several European airports due to snowfall.
