103-year-old priest dies during prayer in church in Rio de Janeiro

Father José Luciano Jacques Penido died on Friday (9), at the age of 103, while praying the Hail Mary at the Church of Santo Afonso, in Tijuca, a neighborhood in the north of Rio de Janeiro. . According to Father Sérgio Luiz e Silva, Penido spent his last moments in prayer with other priests and passed away at around 6pm.

“He was accompanied in these last moments by our presence and by prayer. And so it was that yesterday, at six o’clock in the afternoon, he left. Father Penido’s eyes now contemplate the Redeemer”, said Silva during mass.

Born in Belo Vale, in on October 18, 1922, Penido lived half his life in Rio de Janeiro. The priest was described as a man “in tune” and “critical of reality”, who brought what was happening in the country and in the world “in the light of the Word”. According to Silva, Penido was a great devotee of Our Lady, who prayed many Hail Marys.

The priest also founded the Slave Museum in Belo Vale. “His life path, marked by charity and faithful priesthood, leaves an indelible mark on the history of Belo Vale. As founder of the Slave Museum, Father Luciano also leaves an immeasurable cultural legacy, having been a tireless guardian of the memory and identity of our people”, states the museum’s Instagram post.

Penido was laid to rest last Saturday (10), in the Santo Afonso Parish, and on Sunday (11) in the Glória Cemetery Chapel, in Juiz de Fora, in Minas Gerais. He was buried on the same day, in the Redemptorist Cemetery.
