A social media star and businesswoman has been sued for allegedly falsely advertising a Christmas cake and Easter eggs. The proceeds from their sale were to be used for charitable purposes. The prosecution demanded a sentence of one year and eight months in prison for her.
Chiara Ferragniová (38) has almost 30 million followers as an influencer on Instagram. According to the indictment, she lied to consumers that by purchasing pandoro cakes in 2022, they donate to the Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital charity in Turin.
With a price of nine euros instead of the usual roughly three euros, the hospital received a donation of only 50,000 euros from the confectionary company. In the case of Easter eggs, she allegedly misled buyers that they supported the children’s charity I Bambini delle Fate.
Ferragni’s companies earned approximately one million euros from this promotion. In December 2023, the Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) fined two of Ferragni’s companies one million euros for unfair business practices.
