Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, has been coveted by the North American leader, who has already declared that he would take possession of that Arctic region, with a strategic location and significant mineral resources, “in one way or another”.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promised this Wednesday the inhabitants of Greenland that they can count on the European Union (EU) to respect their wishes and interests.
The leader of the community executive also added that “the Arctic and its security is, without any doubt, an issue for the EU”, at a press conference in Brussels.
Von der Leyen also assured the importance of the inhabitants of Greenland knowing “through actions and not just words” that the EU respects their wishes and interests.
“You can count on us”, he added, highlighting having visited the territory before the crisis launched by Washington and the existence, a year ago, of a European investment program.
Trump threatens to take office “one way or another”
The statements were made before a meeting between officials from Denmark and Greenland with counterparts in Washington, following repeated statements by President Donald Trump of wanting to take possession of that autonomous territory.
