Gay player says he was dismissed due to homophobia, and club responds

Australian player Joshua Cavallo, from Adelaide United, used social media to accuse the club of homophobia for dismissing him last year.

Cavallo, , played for the team between 2021 and 2025.

“Leaving the club had nothing to do with football. Decisions were made by people in positions of power who blocked my opportunities, but not because of my talent but because of who I chose to love,” the 26-year-old midfielder posted on Instagram, with a photo alongside his teammate.

“It’s hard to swallow that my own club was homophobic. I was angry because people thought I was sidelined by injuries, when in reality what left me on the bench was internal homophobia.”

Joshua Cavallo, , took advantage of the message to thank the Australian club’s fans for their support over the years.

Club refutes accusation

After the accusation made by the player, Adelaide United published a statement and commented on the words of its former athlete.

“The club is extremely disappointed by the complaints and rejects the allegations, including any indication that Adelaide United is homophobic. All decisions relating to team selection are made solely on footballing grounds,” Adelaide says.

“Adelaide United has always been committed to providing an inclusive environment for players, staff and fans and we are proud of our work in promoting inclusion in football.”
