Gift to entrepreneurs or turbo for jobs and location: What can the industrial electricity price do?

There are two interpretations of the latest developments. The industrial electricity price set by the coalition serves to strengthen domestic companies in international competition so that jobs and added value are maintained in the country. This is all the more urgent because Germany is rushing ahead and introducing its own electricity subsidy. The government leaders of ÖVP, SPÖ and Neos, who presented the first details about the planned industrial electricity price on Wednesday, adhere to this interpretation. Selected industrial sectors will therefore be guaranteed a net electricity price of five cents per kilowatt hour from 2027. The state covers the difference to the current market price of seven to eight cents. Expected total costs of the measure: 250 million euros per year until 2029, although this calculation also includes a further subsidy for energy-intensive companies.
