El Periódico

Iran maintains its repressive escalation against the participants in the protests that are putting the regime in check. As announced this Wednesday by the head of the judiciary, Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejeithe authorities will not delay the punishments and will carry out “quick” trials and executions against the detained protesters. In this way, Tehran keeps the pulse with the president of the United States, Donald Trumpwhich has been warning the Persian country for several days about a possible military intervention if it maintains the brutal repression with which it is responding to the mobilizations. According to the NGO Iran Human Rights, about 10,000 people have been arrested since the beginning of the protests that started on December 28 against the enormous depreciation of the rial and that have led to an outcry against the regime.

“If we want to do a job, we must do it now. If we want to do something, we have to do it quickly,” Mohseni Ejei said in a video broadcast on the Internet by Iranian state television. “If it is delayed two months, three months later, it does not have the same effect. If we want to do something, we have to do it quickly,” he insisted.

According to the latest report from the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), based in the United States, The deaths in the protests have now risen to 2,571 peoplethe highest number in the different waves of demonstrations recorded in Iran in decades. In the mobilizations for the death in custody of the young woman Mahsha Amini Due to not wearing the veil correctly, in 2022, 558 people died. The figure offered this Wednesday by HRANA includes 2,403 protesters, 147 people affiliated with the government, 12 minors under 18 years of age and 9 non-protester civilians. The day before, a government official informed the Reuters agency that the dead had already amounted to around 2,000.

The internet blockade, which has been in force since last Thursday, January 8, makes it difficult to confirm the numbers of detainees and deaths.

Trump notice

Some analysts already compare the current moment with the chaos and conflict that occurred in the Persian country in the Islamic Revolution of 1979 who established the regime of the ayatollahs and dethroned the monarchy of the shah Mohamed Reza Pahlavifather of Reza Pahlaví, who from exile is encouraging the protests and this Wednesday called on the Iranian Army to protect citizens and join the rallies.

According to the US State Department, the first execution is scheduled for this Wednesday: “More than 10,600 protesters were detained (…). One of them is Erfan Soltani, 26, whose execution is scheduled for January 14,” this department noted in a message on X. For its part, Amnesty International has called on Iran to immediately suspend “all executions, including that of Erfan Soltani.”

For his part, Trump has once again threatened Tehran with “very firm” action if it carries out a campaign of executions and has assured that he will “soon” receive a report on the situation to decide whether to launch a military operation against the Central Asian country. And asked about the retaliation announced by Iran, the Republican has boasted that he already said the same thing when the US Army attacked military installations last June, within the framework of the 12-day war with Israel.

“The ultimate goal (in Iran) is gain“Trump added during an interview with CBS. And what would a victory mean, in his opinion? In response to that question, he gave as examples the capture of the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro; the death of the leader and founder of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al Badadiin a raid in Syria in 2019; and the assassination, a year later, of the Iranian general Ossetian and Coldil’ in an American attack in Baghdad.
