Iran has accused the United States of using the unrest as a pretext for military intervention and regime change

Iran sharply attacked the United States on Tuesday, accusing it of preparing a pretext for a military attack. He was reacting to President Donald Trump’s words about possible drastic measures in connection with the bloody suppression of protests in the Islamic Republic.

Iran on Tuesday accused the United States of trying to create a pretext for military intervention, fomenting political destabilization and threatening the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic. He was reacting to US President Donald Trump’s statements about Washington’s possible strong actions in connection with Iranian interventions against demonstrators and their possible executions. TASR writes about it according to AFP, TASS and The Guardian newspaper.

  • Iran has accused the US of seeking military intervention.
  • Iran criticizes the US and Israel for threatening the country’s sovereignty.
  • Russia warned of catastrophic consequences for the Middle East.
  • In Iran, there are large-scale anti-government protests with casualties.
  • The US has called on its citizens to leave Iran immediately.

A pretext for military intervention?

“US perceptions and policies towards Iran are rooted in regime change, with sanctions, threats, artificially induced unrest and chaos serving as the modus operandi to create a pretext for military intervention,” Iran’s mission to the United Nations (UN) said in a post on the X social network.

According to The Guardian, Iran’s ambassador to the UN also sent a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in which he sharply criticizes the United States and Israel. “The United States and the Israeli regime bear direct and undeniable legal responsibility for the loss of innocent civilian lives, especially among young people,” he wrote. According to the diplomat, the UN and its member states should force both countries to abandon their “destabilizing policy” towards Tehran.

Meanwhile, Russia also condemned “external interference” in Iran’s internal affairs. Moscow has warned that a repeat of last year’s US attacks on Iran would have “catastrophic consequences” for the Middle East and international security.

The protests started at the end of December

The largest demonstrations in Iran since the turn of 2022 and 2023 began on December 28 with a protest by traders in Tehran against rising prices and a sharp weakening of the Iranian rial. Subsequently, they grew into large-scale anti-government protests across the country, which, according to activists, have claimed at least 2,000 lives. The Iranian prosecutor’s office announced on Tuesday that it would bring charges against some of the detained protesters, which could carry the death penalty.

On the same day, the US State Department urged its citizens in Iran to leave the country immediately. It advised them to go overland to Armenia or Turkey. Authorities also urged them to “have an exit plan that does not rely on assistance from the US government.”
