The carnival period is full of sweets and delicacies, for which there is certainly no shortage of people willing. Therefore, it is worth choosing a little more variety and, in addition to the classic donuts, donuts or faworki, this year, prepare carnival roses. It is one of the most impressive delicacies, although today it remains somewhat forgotten. I have been making them in my home for many years and they are second to none.

In the past, they also appeared next to donuts and on solids carnival roses, also known as wattle roses. It is a traditional crispy cake in a shape resembling roses, most often prepared from the same pastry dough used to make faworki.

For this purpose several discs of different sizes are cut out, the petals are cut and connectedthus creating a characteristic flower. After deep frying, they become golden in color decorated with wild rose marmalade they look extremely impressive. They also taste the same.

This delicacy was already known in Old Polish cuisine as one of the traditional carnival sweets. Preparing roses requires some time and precision, which is why they were most often prepared for carnival feasts and Fat Thursday.

Carnival roses have been in my home during the carnival season for several years. They are perfect as a sweet treat for guests and as a delicacy for children. They delight with their delicate structure, the taste of cake combined with marmalade, and also eye-catching appearance. This delicacy pleases not only the palate, but also the eyes.

This year, prepare carnival roses at home according to a traditional recipe. To make it you need the following ingredients:

  • 250 g of flour
  • ½ teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 2 yolks
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon of spirit
  • 800 g fat for frying
  • A pinch of salt

Additionally:

  • Marmalade or rosehip jam
  • Icing sugar
  • Vanilla sugar

Preparation method:

  1. Sift the flour with the butter. Add sugar, baking powder, eggs, yolks, a pinch of salt and spirit. Knead the dough first with a knife, then with your hands – until it is uniform and smooth.
  2. Roll out in batches quite thinly. Cut out 3 discs of different sizes, preferably 7, 6, 5 cm. Most often, at home, they can cut them using a glass, a cutter and a tiny glass.
  3. Cut the discs in 5 places, spread the middle with egg white and fold them according to the size of the discs. Press firmly in the middle to make sure they stick together.
  4. Fry in well-heated fat until light golden in color. Drain excess fat with a paper towel. Put some jam inside. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and enjoy spectacular carnival treats. Enjoy your meal!
