A Benfica fan became a protagonist outside the field as he was the only Benfica fan present at the B team’s game against Newcastle, counting for the Premier League International Cup. To watch the match, held at Whitley Park, in England, he traveled around six hours by car.
On the field, the Reds won impressively 5-0, with Gonçalo Moreira scoring two goals, in addition to goals from Olívio Tomé, Leandro Martins and Francisco Silva. The result allowed Benfica to gain five points in Group C of the competition.
At the end of the match, players and technical staff made a point of going to the stands to applaud the lone fan, thanking him for the support and effort shown. A simple gesture, but full of symbolism, which was also highlighted by the club on social media.
A Benfica fan traveled six hours to go see the B team in Newcastle (where we won 5-0). Before the game started, the team made the traditional bow directed towards the only fan on the field. And in the end they celebrated together.
To Benfica.
