MG approves law allowing homeless people with pets to enter shelters

A new law, which authorizes people in vulnerable situations to access halfway houses and municipal shelters in the capital of Minas Gerais accompanied by their petswas sanctioned, this Tuesday (13), by the City of Belo Horizonte (MG). The rule was published in the DOM (Official Gazette of the Municipality), this Wednesday (14).

In addition to releasing pets, the text provides for castration and vaccination programs for animals, educational actions for guardians and society in general on responsible ownership and partnerships for adoption campaigns.

A The law also establishes that the management of shelters can be carried out either by Belo Horizonte City Hall or through partnerships. The spaces must be planned to guarantee the well-being of the animals with hygiene, ventilation, lighting and feeding conditions.

Previously, residents in vulnerable situations could not access these places with their pets and, as a result, many chose to remain on the streets, without shelter from the rain or cold.

After publishing to the DOM, the law comes into force in 90 days.
