Peace plan for Gaza enters second phase, US announces

The new stage marks the transition “from a ceasefire to demilitarization, technocratic governance and reconstruction” of Palestinian territory.

The US President’s special envoy announced this Wednesday that the United States’ plan to end the war in the Gaza Strip has entered the second phase, focused on the disarmament of the Islamist movement Hamas.

“We are announcing the launch of the second phase of the President’s 20-point plan to end the conflict in Gaza,” wrote Steve Witkoff on social media.

The North American special envoy explained that this new stage marks the transition “from a ceasefire to demilitarization, technocratic governance and reconstruction” of Palestinian territory, in an announcement made shortly after the creation of a Palestinian technocratic committee in charge of administering the Gaza Strip was announced.

Committee creation Palestinian technocratic

A Most Palestinian movements expressed support to the 15-member Palestinian technocratic committee tasked with administering the Gaza Strip, after Egypt announced an all-party agreement on its composition.

In a statement released at the end of a meeting in Cairo, the Islamist movement Hamas, the presidency of the Palestinian Authority and also the Islamic Jihad group said they “support the mediators’ efforts to form the transitional Palestinian national committee”.

In another statement, cited by the official Wafa news agency, the Palestinian presidency, based in Ramallah, also expressed support for this body, which, according to a source in the presidency, “reflects the position of Fatah”, the party led by Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas.

Egypt announced a consensus on the names of the 15 members of the Palestinian technocratic committee that will administer the Gaza Strip, under the terms of US President Donald Trump’s plan.
