  • The Costa Rican government was supposed to reveal the preparation of the assassination of President Rodrigo Chaves.
  • The attack was supposed to be planned before the national elections in early February.

Information about the plot was provided by the head of the Costa Rican Office for Intelligence Services and National Security, Jorge Torres. Citing a “confidential source”, he confirmed that an assassin had been hired in connection with the attack on the president. News of the alleged plot comes about two weeks before presidential and parliamentary elections in Costa Rica.

The current president Chaves can no longer run because the constitution prohibits him from running for a second consecutive term. He therefore supported his former minister Laura Fernández as his successor.

Meanwhile, the opposition warned of the threat of interference in the elections by the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele. Chaves invited him to Costa Rica on Wednesday to lay the foundation stone of a new prison, which was designed on the model of the well-known CECOT prison in El Salvador. AFP explains that thousands of young men are being held there as part of Bukele’s crackdown on gang violence.
