A train traveling from the capital to the country’s northeast derailed on Wednesday when a construction crane crashed into one of its carriages, killing at least 22 people and injuring at least 80, police said.
The accident happened on Wednesday morning in Sihyo district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, 230 kilometers northeast of Bangkok, and the train was bound for Ubon Ratchasimani province.
Police said a crane working on a high-speed rail project collapsed and hit a passing train, causing it to derail and spark a brief fire. Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire and focus on rescuing the passengers.
