US freezes visa processing for Brazil and 74 other countries, says TV

The United States decided to suspend the processing of all visas for 75 countries, including Brazil. The investigation was released by Fox News, this Wednesday (14), which claims to have had first-hand access to a memo from the American State Department.

The measure should come into effect from January 21st, the broadcaster reported. The document directs consular officials to refuse visas in accordance with current legislation while the government reassesses screening and verification procedures.

No turnaround time for this verification was provided.

According to the broadcaster, the measure by President Donald Trump’s government is part of an “effort to restrain candidates considered likely to become a public charge.”

The list of affected countries includes, in addition to Brazil, Russia, Iran, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand and others.

Brazilian government sources told the news anchor CNN BrazilGustavo Uribe, who discussed the possible cancellation of visas and the Lula government advocates caution and awaits the formalization of the decision.

An American government source told the correspondent CNN Brazil in New York, Priscila Yazbeck, that there are no details about the measure and the Brazilian government has not been communicated.

The decision comes amid the broad campaign promoted by Trump since he returned to the presidency in January last year.

In November, Trump promised to “permanently halt” the campaign following a shooting near the White House by an Afghan national that killed a member of the National Guard.
