Zema will leave the Minas Gerais government in March to run for president, says newspaper

The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo) is expected to leave office on March 22 to run for President of the Republic. Touted as a possible vice-president on the ticket headed by Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), the Minas Gerais native has already denied the possibility and stated that he will continue his candidacy to the end.

The information was given by journalist Lauro Jardim do The Globe. With the lack of compatibility, Zema must intensify trips around the country in search of political and electoral support. The governor’s advisors say the shutdown date is “probable”.

Zema’s name was floated by the president of the Progressistas party, Ciro Nogueira (PI), as the ideal candidate for Flávio Bolsonaro’s vice president. Both the senator and Zema, however, ruled out the hypothesis and indicated that, at least for now, they will follow different paths.

With Zema’s departure, vice-governor Mateus Simões (PSD) will take command of Minas Gerais.

According to electoral legislation, holders of Executive positions who wish to run for another position must leave the position up to six months before the election.
