Deputy Prime Minister of Greenland Mute Egede earlier on Wednesday announced the arrival of soldiers of the North Atlantic Alliance NATO in Greenland, AFP reported. According to him, they will arrive in the next few days to take part in training on the island.
The deployment of troops to this arctic island by Copenhagen’s allies can be seen as a reaction to US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that he wants to gain control over Greenland. He justifies his interest in US national security needs and also in an effort to prevent Russia and China from taking over this Danish autonomous territory. He did not rule out the use of military force to achieve this goal.
Trump reiterated the need to acquire Greenland on Wednesday as well. According to the president, Denmark cannot protect the island from Moscow and Beijing, but the United States can. Macron declared on Wednesday that any attack on the sovereignty of a European ally will have unprecedented consequences. According to him, France is closely monitoring the situation and will act in full solidarity with Denmark.
